6.10.08

12:25 PM 6/6/2008 Tallinn, Estonia

The road. What a twisted tale it weaves. You can never, ever predict what will happen when you step out on the long & winding road. Yesterday was a perfect example of this.
We were booked for 5 shows in Europe this month solely because of the chance to play Sweden Rock, an incredible festival in Solvesborg, Sweden, for the second time. The first time we played there, in 2005, was one of the greatest shows of our career. To be asked back for a second time was an easy 'yes' from us , we were so excited to play for all the 35,000 or so Sweden Rockers & also hang out with & watch all the other great bands on the bill. When it was publicized that we were playing Sweden Rock , all of a sudden we got offers to play in Oslo, Norway, Tallinn, Estonia, Tampere, Finland, & Oulu, Finland. We accepted all of these shows, all booked around the big one, Sweden Rock. After 2 weeks in Australia, playing 5 shows in Europe before the big summer USA tour seemed like the perfect thing to do .
But you can never predict what the road has in store.
Basically, there was no way to pull this off. Touring Europe these days means flying from gig to gig. That means checking all guitars, basses, drums, merch, sound racks, backdrops, band luggage, everything you see on the stage has to be checked in at every airport before and after each & every show. It is always a crapshoot to see if you will actually get all your gear on the other side. If you have a connecting flight, you are at the mercy of baggage handlers at each airport to load up all your gear in time to make the connecting flight. Heathrow in London UK is the absolute worst for this. Every time we have flown to Heathrow, they have lost bags, kept us in a "holding pattern" above the airport so long that we invariably miss our connecting flight, tell us our carry on luggage is "too big" & must now be checked (even though we flew with the carry ons from Australia, New York , LA, or further with no problem whatsoever).  I actually dread all airports now, but Heathrow is without a doubt the worst in the world.
So, we go onstage in Oslo at 10 pm. We are due to be onstage at Sweden Rock the next day at 1pm in the afternoon. There is only one flight that leaves from Norway in time for us to make this stage time. The only way we can do it is if we catch the 6:15am flight to Stockholm, & then catch the 8:15am connecting flight to Ronneby, Sweden, the closest airport to Sweden Rock, then drive straight to the stage, play the show , then drive straight back to airport to fly to Tallinn, Estonia for our next nights show at The Old Monastery Yard . There is only one flight from Sweden to Estonia each day, at 6 pm. If you miss that, you have to wait till the next day at 6 to fly again! Its not like America where there are flights everywhere hour on the hour. This schedule left no time to sleep, & no room for error. We made no errors, & still could not make the 1pm show time at Sweden Rock.
We finished the show in Oslo at 11:45 pm. Lobby call for the drive to the Oslo airport was at an excruciating 3:45 am. That left me around a 3 hour window to try & sleep before playing in front of 35,000 people in only a matter of hours.  I did a runner back to the hotel, took 2 Tylenol pms, &  actually did manage to get around 2 hours of sleep before my tour manager hammered on the door to wake me up. I got down to the lobby at 3:45 am, proud to see my band & crew all down there ready to go. They didn't get to sleep at all but were still packed & ready to go at that ungodly hour of the morning.
We got to the Oslo airport & I was so proud we made the 6:15 am flight to Sweden. Checking all the stage gear etc took an hour at least, but we made it & were ready to rock come 1pm . This was gonna be a great day. So I thought.
When we got to Stockholm, we knew we were fucked. We had only 45 minutes to get to our connecting flight, the only flight available that would get us to Sweden Rock in time for the show at 1pm. Then the proverbial "ball" dropped . We were told by airport staff that we had to go to baggage claim , get all our luggage, stage gear, & instruments, take all the luggage & gear through customs, then RE-CHECK all the gear again! In only 45 minutes.
We then knew that we were truly fucked.
Of course the lines at customs & "baggage drop" were endless. We ran from terminal to terminal, dripping in sweat, sleep deprived, not wanting to face the fact we might miss the show we had based all the other shows in Europe around! When we finally got through Swedish customs it was around 8am. The plane was to leave in 15 minutes. We pleaded with airport staff to let us check our gear in time to make the flight, but of course they did not care. At about 8:10am we realized there was no physical way we could get to the Sweden Rock stage by 1pm. We called the festival & pleaded with them to let us go on later that 1pm . We were met with a gruff "this is not possible". I have no idea why we were given the 1pm slot on the first day of the festival, especially considering that we played at around 3 or 4 in the afternoon last time & were one of the biggest attended shows on the bill that day. Why they wanted us to go onstage at 1pm is still a complete mystery to all of us. The festival was adamant that we get to the gig, even if we had to rent a private plane, but when we asked to just let us go on a little later in the day so we could make it happen, they just kept saying "this is not possible". Well, getting to Sweden Rock by 1 pm was definitely "not possible". There was no physical way for us to make that stage time, by flying , driving, or any combination thereof. If we could have gone onstage at 2pm , or 3 or 4 like the last time we played there, it would have been an incredible show just like 2005. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. I want to say "sorry" to all the fans in Sweden... but we tried our best to get to you to play. We probably should not have accepted the Oslo show in the first place, but we had no foresight into what was going to happen in the Stockholm airport.
Good news: as I write this in Estonia, tonight’s show in Tallinn is gonna be a sell-out. We are playing outdoors in the ancient ruins of a castle, & it is one of the coolest venues I have ever seen. It will be packed & guess what.... I have never even heard of the country 'Estonia'. You can never predict what will happen on the road!
All I can say is, I cannot WAIT to get on a tour bus this summer on the road with Poison all across America. Airports fucking SUCK. We are supposed to be "on the road", not "in the air". I just can't wait to tumble out of my bunk, hang out with my bro's on the bus, roll down the highway, watch some movies, buy useless junk at truck stops, & NOT SEE AN AIRPORT from June till September!!! Yes this is my dream come true. See you soon U S A !!!!!!!!!!!!! See you soon TOUR BUS!!! Goodbye to AIRPORTS / CUSTOMS / SECURITY / MISSED SHOWS ..................... Hello the long & winding road of the U S A. We certainly do miss ya !!

'I'm With The Band' Australian Interview

Bach To Basics - Sebastian Bach

May 12, 2008 · Print This Article

sebbach.jpg

As the wild front man for 80s heavy metal band Skid Row, Sebastian Bach is no stranger to the highs and lows of rock stardom. The singer has become a star of American television in recent years (on popular drama, Gilmore Girls and MTV's reality series, Celebrity Rap Superstar) but his latest solo album, Angel Down, proves that he is still a musical force to be reckoned with. Reverb spoke to the front-man about his upcoming tour and his friendship with Axl Rose of Guns 'N Roses.

Have you had an opportunity to relax before your big Australian tour?

No, I'm not relaxing. There's so much stuff to do. I actually went running today about 8.2 miles along the ocean. There's a lot of athleticism in playing on stage, so I've really got to get ready. Running is the closest thing I can find that prepares me for the aerobic nature of being on stage, singing at the top of my lungs.

Are you looking forward to getting back to Australia?

Oh, yeah! This is my third time in three years, and that's really amazing. When [Skid Row] first played in Australia around 1989 or 1990, it was a very rare thing. People couldn't believe we were headlining Australia on the first (eponymous) Skid Row album. The world has become such a smaller place in the last 18 years. It feels like I'm just playing Pennsylvania or something (laughs).

What's different about the rock world now compared to when you were starting out with Skid Row?

Well, the main difference would be that back then you had to pay for music. But the live experience seems to have taken on an even more important part of rock - because you can't download a live show. The experience of watching a band perform in front of your face is something you can't get on the internet.

Angel Down is your first solo album in eight years - did you have a clear idea of what you wanted it to sound like?

I just wanted to put another album in your iPod, by me, that makes sense next to the other albums. It's pretty simple. I did an album in 2005 with Frameshift called An Absence Of Empathy, and it was a progressive metal album. So it's not like I didn't make an album in eight years, but Angel Down is a lot more what you would expect from me. It's high energy rock and roll. I'm so proud of it. I think Angel Down is the best record I've done since Slave To The Grind, about a million years ago (chuckles). So I'm really, really happy to show the world that I can put out a solo record that kicks ass.

And you got your old friend Axl Rose to sing on Angel Down?

Yeah, it's an incredible thing. The world has been waiting for Chinese Democracy for a good 15 years and if you want to get a taste of what Axl actually sounds like as of last year, then get Angel Down because he's on three songs. He sounds incredible! I just can't believe that in the history of rock he would choose to collaborate on my album.

"Axl texted me right away and asked if I was joining Velvet Revolver, and I said, 'No, not that I know of.'"

What have you learned from your friendship with Axl?

He's a fascinating individual and he does things a lot differently to what I do. He doesn't do any interviews at all and I do millions of them. It's an incredible experience to be talking to him before he goes on stage. I'll be backstage in his room and he carries on a conversation as we're walking to the stage. The whole [arena] is going nuts and Axl will be telling me about what he did last night or the day before, and he doesn't break a stride. I'll be like, "Well, ok, you're going on stage now," and he'll say, "Ok, I'll talk to you later." He'll walk out there and all of Sydney's Acer Arena crowd is like, "Ahhh, there he is. Oh, my God!" People can't believe that he's actually standing there. It's such an intense moment every night.

It's a crazy situation, because he doesn't show himself to too many people and he's always been there for me. I think it's funny that when Scott Weiland left Velvet Revolver, the last thing he said was, "I think Sebastian Bach would be a good choice for you guys." I think that's because he's eluding to the fact that you can't get away from Guns 'N Roses. They're like The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. I'm sure he felt frustrated in trying to fill Axl's shoes. Axl texted me right away and asked if I was joining Velvet Revolver, and I said, "No, not that I know of." Axl has been so nice to me, I wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardise our friendship.

I'm in the middle of all these huge rock icons who are calling me at the same time, and I'm sitting there thinking, "How does this f**King happen to me?" Axl said to me, "Dude, the way that you sing is rare." The way that Axl sings is rare too. There's not a lot of guys anymore that can sing in the range that we sing in.

Would Axl be unhappy if you were to sing for Velvet Revolver?

I think it would be awkward. I opened for two Guns 'N Roses tours. Axl sang on my record and I sing on Chinese Democracy. We're very close friends. For me to join a band and then sing all of his songs would be kinda weird. But, Angel Down, is what's in my heart and I can't wait to get out there and tour it. That's what I'll be doing for the foreseeable future.

Will your Oz shows include Skid Row classics as well as old material?

I'm not sure yet. Maybe, maybe not. You'll have to come along and see. I will be bringing my drummer Bobby Jarzombek, who actually broke his wrist a week before my last Australian tour with Roses. He's all healed up and ready to go, and he's the actual drummer from Angel Down. He's one of the best in the world. The whole band that played on the record will be coming along. It will be a great metal show - I'll see you on May 31st!

Tickets are selling fast, so get along to Newcastle Panthers or www.moshtix.com.au to grab your tickets to the show on May 31st.

For those of you who enjoy the cover artwork by my late father David Bierk on 'Angel Down', 'Slave To The Grind', & the inside artwork on 'sUBHUMAN rACE' & 'BRING 'EM BACH ALIVE!', there is a posthumous David Bierk art show in New York City now until May 6 at the Nancy Hoffman gallery.Nancy Hoffman Gallery NYC
My father scheduled these posthumous art shows before he died. The show currently on exhibition in New York is the last ever David Bierk art show  scheduled in the USA. My dad was born in 1944 & started showing his art in the sixties. The finality of this being his last ever American show is a reality that is very hard for me to accept. From spending my childhood helping dad hang his art on the walls of Canadian art galleries, to realizing that this will be the last chance ever on the planet to see a David Bierk show in the USA, does indeed fill my heart with a heavy sadness, even though I know 'David is Watching' & would be so proud of his show up now at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery.
There is one more remaining scheduled show in September 2008, in Montreal Canada.

Dear Planet Earth: An Interview with Sebastian Bach

[29 February 2008]

Through reality shows, theater appearances, and Hep Alien, the enthusiastic Bach keeps his focus (and his funding) on his music, even if the industry is a bitchslap.

by Adam Williams

PopMatters Associate Music Editor

Brash ... outspoken ... irrepressible ... Sebastian Bach crashed the party two decades ago, and still can be the life of said party as required. Most recognized as the face and voice of hard rocking Skid Row, Baz is gifted with one of the most impressive sets of vocal chords the music business has ever seen. In addition to proving his metal mettle over the years, Baz has also enjoyed a successful career in theater and television, evidence that even youth gone wild can mature into a renaissance man. Yet, no matter what segment of the arts he’s immersed in at a given time, Baz was born to rock ... hard ... as his new album, Angel Down, attests.

I first crossed paths with Baz early last year, via a bit of Internet commerce. He’d offered a unique piece of memorabilia for sale (Vince Neil’s Dr. Feelgood tour jacket), which I purchased without a second thought. Numerous persons, who became aware of our deal, voiced their opinions, unanimously condemning Baz for parting with the item. “How could he sell that?” they cried in unison, taking personal affront to the transaction, as if our business was their business. But Baz had his reasons, and yes, there was a definite method to his madness, as I recently found out.

cover art

Angel Down

(MRV; US: 20 Nov 2007; UK: 26 Nov 2007)

Currently promoting Angel Down, Baz’ excitement about his newest endeavor permeated our conversation, and his passion for creating quality art was on full display. Gregarious and accommodating, the former slave to the grind was in rare form, taking a few moments with PopMatters to wax poetic on various topics, including how Angel Down came to fruition, dueting with Axl Rose, and why Gilmore Girls was a means to an end.

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages ... the one, the only ... Sebastian Bach.

Yo Adam!

Hey, Baz. What’s up, man?
I don’t know you from Adam.

You don’t know me from Adam ... I bet you know me as the Mötley Töur Whöre with Vince’s jacket, though.
Is that you?

That would be me.
Oh my God! Well, I’ve got to thank you because you helped pay for the album Angel Down.

Did I get any credit?
No [laughs].

Okay, that’s alright. I’ve got to send a photo to you.
Awesome!

Congratulations on this album, it’s fantastic.
Thanks, brother. Thank you very much.

I’ve listened to it quite a few times in the last couple of days and I’m actually surprised that it is ... it’s a really powerful statement. It’s pretty amazing.
I don’t know why you’re surprised, because I think Slave to the Grind is a powerful statement. I think Jekyll & Hyde—The Musical is a powerful statement. I think SuperGroup was a far less powerful statement [laughing]. You know, you’re not the first person to say that, and I don’t really understand why. The only thing I can figure out is, since you’re a Mötley Crüe fan ... I guess Tommy Lee is getting sued because he was on too many reality shows or whatever, and all I can say is that maybe I’m in the same boat of doing so much celebrity stuff, that, like some reviewer said, “One almost forgets that he’s a rock singer.” And I’m like, “I know!” But the thing is, the thing that the people don’t know ... if there was no Gilmore Girls there would be no Angel Down. I did not have a record deal when Spitfire folded, and if I didn’t have the money to finish what I started, there would be no album. Rob Halford paid for Resurrection with the money he made from Priest. And it’s like, it’s shocking to fans. But I even think that Van Halen doesn’t have a record deal right now. It’s just unbelievable that people have this image of, “Why didn’t you do a record instead of a TV show?” I didn’t have a record deal [laughs]. How ‘bout that?

It’s a sign of the industry.
I paid for the record from all the other shit that I did, you know what I’m sayin’? And if you like Angel Down, you should kiss the ground for Gilmore Girls, because there would be no Angel Down if there wasn’t a way for me to fund it after Spitfire Records folded in the middle of it. Then I was fortunate enough to get a great record deal with MRV, Merovingian Music. Jack Ponti and Jason Flom, they’re the ones that put my voice back on a CD for you, but I basically finished Angel Down and plopped it, like, in their lap, you know, like completed. Except for the drum sounds and the mastering, I did it all myself. So, if I didn’t have those TV shows and people like you buying Vince Neil’s jacket off me, then I wouldn’t have been able to pay for the record. So, that’s the reality of rock.

With major labels on the decline and a lot of artists like yourself releasing their own material ... when you go in and record something like Angel Down, is your focus on how and what to record different from 10, 15 or 20 years ago?
Absolutely not, no, not at all. Never. I’m a real ... people can say I got a big ego, or that I’m hard to work with, and that all is probably, definitely true, because if I didn’t love rock ‘n’ roll so much ... You’re literally hearing my love of rock ‘n’ roll on this record, that’s what you’re hearing. You’re hearing me lay it all out, man, in a world where an album like this is extremely rare, and is only going to become more rare. And the reason is ... I know how to sing because I’ve been doing this all of my life. These kids that think that getting on American Idol and doing a cover version one time is going to make you a star, that’s not gonna ... you know, the way I do it, is really, it’s like a muscle. I know how to do it ... it’s just like, it’s a talent, you know what I mean? Like Mötley Crüe are better now than they ever were. They’ve been doing it for 30 years. We used to think, “I hope I die before I get old,” but people like Aerosmith, the Stones, Kiss—they’ve all proven that music is something that you get better at if you know what you’re doing. And that’s what I hear in Angel Down, I hear me more mature and stronger than I was when I was a little kid. That’s what I hear; it’s a man. It’s like the difference between a man’s album and a little boy’s album.

That’s kind of along the line of when I said I was surprised. I wasn’t surprised by the quality of your voice, I was more surprised in terms of having an album (like this) come out in a very weak market, and going, ‘Wow.’
Well, I have the luxury of, you know ... I’ve made a good living, and that’s what you’re hearing, too. It’s like I didn’t buy myself a Ferrari, I bought myself Angel Down. I bought it for you, too. Really, honest to God. That’s really the honest to God truth. That’s really the truth.

It was a work in progress for a while, wasn’t it?
I mean if you really want to get into all of that ... really what happened was, you know I was signed to this label, Spitfire, and we started recording, and we had a budget, and I agreed to the producer and all of the band members, “Here is what you are going to get paid if you do this,” right? Then half way through, they went bankrupt, and they didn’t give me half the money. So everyone’s looking at me going, “What’s up dude?” And I was like, “Oh my God, what do I do?” That’s where I say thank God for Gilmore Girls. Because that’s where I said, most musicians I know would buy themselves a Ferrari, or would not go into their personal funds to pay their mortgage or whatever, but I just said fuck it ... I go, ‘This is it.’ I go, ‘I don’t care, this is worth it to me.’ It’s worth more than a Ferrari to me, you know? A lot more. And again, my inspiration really is Halford because he did the same thing. He went the same direction, paid for the whole thing himself. I remember reading that and going, ‘Is that really what it takes?’ You can be the best singer in the world, Rob Halford, and nobody’s going to help you out to make a record. Is that really what is going on now? So I go, ‘Wow, okay, well, I’m in the same position.’ So I got signed on the strength of the record, that’s the good thing, you know. I didn’t get signed because of my haircut, or the clothes I wear, or what I did in 1989. I got signed for the sound of the CD, and that’s precious to me.

Bach on Trailer Park Boys

Over the process of the whole project coming together, with the ups and the downs, did you ever have a concern that the album would lack any consistency?
Yes, definitely. Definitely. Great question. If you really research things, Classic Rock asked me about five years ago, ‘What’s taking so long?’ And my answer was, well, I’ve played with all of these different guys, and my challenge is to put this together and make it sound like one record because it’s done with all of these different people. The guy looked at me like I was nuts, but you know exactly what I’m talking about. And the guy that really made it cohesive, one unique, unified sound is obviously Roy Z. He’s the producer, and he knows how to produce a record. And the players on my album are super duper heavy metal guys ... Steve DiGiorgio, Metal Mike [Chlasciak], Bobby [Jarzombek], are all metal guys.

So we already had “American Metalhead”, “Negative Light”, “Take You Down With Me”, “Angel Down”, we had all the really heavy songs. And then Roy said, “Dude, this is killer, you need straight up rock.’ And I did not know what he meant, because if you’re the artist, you are way too close to everything. And then he goes, “What do you think of this?”, and he pulls out a guitar and plays me the riff to “(Love Is) A Bitchslap”, and I go, “Oh yeah!” I go, “Wow! That’s cool!” ‘Cause it’s not wimpy, it’s heavy. It’s cool. It’s rock.

That happens to be my favorite song on the album.
Cool, I love it, too. I love every song because they’re all so different. But I love that one. It’s rude!

When you go into the studio with a guy like Roy Z., who has an extensive resume of clients, did you find it intimidating to work with him at all?
Yeah, yeah, but one weird thing about this record is that I’ve never done an album ever that I did just coming straight off the road. Like, we literally played a festival in Vienna, Austria one night. Actually, we played in the afternoon, we played with Tool and Guns N’ Roses ... a killer show ... Nova Rock it was called. Then we, right after Guns’ set, I gave Axl my copy of The Tao of Willie ... I remember, I was just like, “What the fuck is this?” [laughs] We were hanging out with Nina ... you know, “99 Luft Balloons”.

Oh sure, yeah.
[Laughing] It was a weird night ... Anyway, I digress. We got right on the bus after that, go straight to the airport, and then right to Sound City Studios in Hollywood. We check into the hotel, and the very next day we are rocking, ‘cause we only had two weeks before we had to get back on the road. So I’ve never done an album like that, and there’s a lot of screams on the record, and when you say was I intimidated, it was kind of funny because I was intimidated to follow in Halford’s footsteps. But the way it worked out was that my voice was so hot and high from screaming on the tour, that is was way easier for me to scream on an album than it ever was. ‘Cause the way my voice works, it’s a very strange instrument. I am literally one of the only singers I know that gets better the more I sing. That’s really the truth. Tyler’s like that ... but my voice is like a muscle, and like on Broadway, if I was doing six nights a week, I would sing the strongest on the sixth night. I’m very lucky like that. So I can hear that on the record, like the energy coming from the road.

Three of the tracks feature Axl, a guy you’ve got a lot of time in with. When you were recording those three tracks, you’ve gotta tell me honestly, were there any surreal moments when you were just standing there doing what you’re doing, and you’re thinking to yourself, ‘Shit man, I’m recording with Axl’?
The whole thing was definitely surreal because I just can’t believe that he actually did it. It’s never going to sink in really, and then to read what he wrote about it on his web site was another crazy moment when I was staring at the computer going, ‘I can’t believe this.’ All I can really say is the ending of “Stuck Inside” where we figured out where he would sing, and then he wrote what he was going to sing. And then he just ... his voice is just ... I thought he was done when he sang the part where I’m solo, where the riff stops and it’s just me a-cappella. I thought he was just going to double that up with me, and then he just soared up to this crazy ass note, like a demon. You can hear it, it’s on there. That’s the one we kept. And it’s so eerie sounding, and it’s so evil. It sounds so evil to me! That’s what I dig about it.

How did you end up deciding to cover “Back in the Saddle”?
That was 100 percent Roy Z.’s suggestion. He was ... again, a perfect suggestion. That’s the one the people on radio are digging. That’s for sure an exciting take. I didn’t want to do any covers, I just wanted to prove that I could do a record with all brand new songs, but that was a great suggestion. I’m glad he made it. And what I really love about it is how Metal Mike and Bobby dig in to the chorus. It sounds exactly like the Aerosmith version, but then it doesn’t sound nothing like it, it’s weird. I don’t know how, because they didn’t reinvent it, because you don’t need to reinvent perfection, but they made it their own, that’s for sure.

With the undercurrent of real metal power throughout this album ... you have a ballad in there, what have you ... but did you expect the album to come out as heavy as it did?
I guess if you’re not a musician, you have one aspect, or one way that you think that you make records. It’s so not an exact science, it’s like, I go in there with nothing, like I’m just walking around, you know what I mean? Like, just ideas ... I mean, how do you totally make something that is going to please everybody? It’s virtually impossible, because how do you guess what everybody wants to hear? All I can do is make something that I like, that’s all I can do. Because then I can stand by it. You know? Then no matter what, if I can listen to it myself, I won’t go mentally insane. Like at the end of the day, I have to love it or I’m not doing it. And I love this album, and I’ve never had a record in my life that’s got the reviews that this record’s got. None of the Skid Row albums got reviewed this good. I’m not saying that to put them down, I have the reviews [laughs]. That’s all you can do as a musician. What are you suppose to do, take a poll from everybody? That’s all you can do is make something that you dig and hope everybody else digs it.

For people who haven’t gotten the press kit and didn’t see you on Kat Von D’s show getting tattooed, can you tell us the importance of the album’s cover art?
It’s extremely meaningful, it’s a painting my dad did in 1990 called “David Watching” ... he has since passed on, so when we had the song “Angel Down” picked for the title track, a lot of the lyrics have to do with the war ... and I don’t have to explain to any soldier’s family what an angel down is. Obviously, that can refer to a soldier, so that painting that my dad did totally fit in with the title Angel Down. That’s basically why it got picked.

Venturing into television and theater, stage, and having done that successfully, when you went back into record Angel Down, did you feel compelled to prove to critics that you could still blow things up with a new album?
What a great question! Because SuperGroup was airing exactly, when we were recording this, for the first time. Like literally, I was watching myself fall down the stairs drunk off my ass with Roy Z. and Bobby, and we were all looking at each other going, “That’s insane!” So they’re 100 percent, “Okay, take this on!” Great question, nobody asked me that. The song “You Don’t Understand”, to me vocally, is a very special song. One of my favorite songs I ever sang is called “In a Darkened Room”, and there’s a verse in there, the second verse, where I go into this high, clean sound in my voice that always was shocking to me, so I tried to put some more of that on this record. And the song “You Don’t Understand” ... I can remember watching SuperGroup going, “Fuck this shit!” Being really pissed off, and saying, “I’m gonna make this song, ‘You Don’t Understand’, so beautiful ... shove it up your motherfucking ass, Planet Earth!” I still remember watching that show and flicking a switch in my head saying, “That’s it!” Great question, so yes I do. Once I flick that switch in my head, you better look out! ‘Cause that’s like a real thing up there.

With the involvement in SuperGroup, with the surge of reality based television programs ... you saw what happened with Rockstar SuperNova ...
No, I didn’t see that one.

It got so much press, but commercially it didn’t do that well.
Because there’s nothing to it.

It was a TV creation ... bring superstars together and see if they can make an album with an amateur. It didn’t particularly work, but if someone was to come to you and say, “Okay Baz, you can pick a bassist, drummer, and guitar player to make a legitimate super group to record an album,” who would you pick?
Well, I would’ve picked Ted Nugent.

Uncle Ted, alright.
No, no, no [laughs]. The reason I just answered you like that is ‘cause I fully expected us to make a record, and do a couple of shows ... it would’ve been simple, it would’ve been easy, but they didn’t want to. Um, who would I pick? I’d definitely pick Vinnie Paul on the drums. Bobby I love just as much, but Vinnie knows how to produce records and has his own label and all this stuff. He’s like a businessman. I love Bobby just as much as Vinnie on the drums, they’re both equally as good to me, but I love the album Hellyeah so much that I’d love to do some work with Vinnie Paul, definitely. Um, bass? Geddy Lee, put him on there.

That’s an interesting choice.
Guitar ... hmmm ... I don’t know ... God. I love my guys. I guess I’m not allowed to say my guys. Um, guitar ... well I love Ace Frehley. I’d love it if Ace had like, the tone of Rock and Roll Over. I love that guitar sound. That would be so great. I don’t know dude, I’m not really thinking about other bands these days, so much.

Fair enough. With respect to what you’ve done in your career, how would you compare the transition from music into acting, versus acting back into music?
Number one, acting in theater is totally different than acting on TV. That’s two different things. They’re not the same. Theater is much more like rock ‘n’ roll because there’s an audience. So right there it’s different, there’s no audience in television. So that’s different. Theater is way more similar to rock ‘n’ roll. How would I describe the transition?

Was it easier to go from one to the other?
It’s basically ... okay, I’ve done a lot of TV, so it’s hard to compare I Love the ‘70s or I Love the ‘80s to Trailer Park Boys or Gilmore Girls. Trailer Park Boys is the coolest thing I ever did on television. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, it’s in Canada, but you can see it on YouTube, I believe. That’s the best thing, and Gilmore Girls too, that’s very creative, and fun. The difference between music and TV is you can’t even compare the two. There is no art form like music that makes you feel in your heart the way that you feel when you hear a song that you love. There’s nothing that will transport you back to the place where you first heard it. I can guarantee you in 10 years from now, we will play Angel Down and we will think of this time right now. That’s why I bristle when I hear the word ‘80s, whatever, it’s ‘cause I don’t look at one certain time of my life, I look at my whole life, like my dad did. He painted every day, and he didn’t paint any different in ‘79 and ‘89, he just painted. So it’s like music defines the time.

Angel Down will only grow in importance. Just like Subhuman Race when it came out, people weren’t ready for it. But over time, people loved that album, because it’s a good album. And the cream always rises to the top. That’s what she said! [laughing] But that’s true too, and it’s like, it’s such a personal thing. I chuckle because I just think of anybody that got the record and put it in their iPod and put in their headphones and pressed play, and turned it up and got their fucking head blown off by the opening riff. I’m chuckling right now, because I know it kicks ass, I don’t need anybody to tell me. And I don’t even need sales to tell me, because it’s such a fucked up world that we live in, I can’t go by that. I just have to go by my heart, you know, the way I always have done, and the way I always will.

Feeling so good about the album, and what you’ve created, are you anxious to get it out on the road?
To be honest with you ... I’m 39 years old now and I’m not old by any means, but touring clubs is a very different lifestyle, and hours and everything, than touring arenas, and touring theaters, Broadway shows. It’s just a different scene. I don’t look forward to going and playing every club in the world, just ‘cause I just did the whole Guns N’ Roses tour and we sold out Madison Square Garden, and the Meadowlands, and everywhere, so I mean I’d obviously love to keep doing that, but I’m not gonna wait around either. So I’m going to try my best. My whole point of this is it’s a hard fuckin’ life touring around clubs, you know? It just is, it’s not easy going on stage at midnight on a Wednesday night, and pulling out of town at 6am and driving and getting there at three in the afternoon. It’s just ridiculous, dude ... but I’m gonna go do it. [laughs]. After all that, we’re going! Let’s go! Yeah!

We look forward to seeing you.
Woo! Let’s do it! I’ll try my hardest.

I have two more questions. For you, who’s done a lot professionally, what’s more challenging, taking the stage in front of a sold out Madison Square Garden or a packed Broadway theater?
You can’t compare the two, only because on a rock ‘n’ roll stage, I’m in charge ... unless Ted Nugent’s in my band [laughs]. But on a Broadway stage, Andrew Lloyd Weber is in charge. You know what I mean? Everything is scripted and disciplined on a Broadway stage, and everything is unscripted and undisciplined on a rock ‘n’ roll stage, if it’s any good. I mean the set list is scripted, but you know, it’s always something different. So Broadway is pretty much the same thing all the time. That’s the big difference.

Last one, and this is the obligatory question. You look back at 2007, you see Led Zeppelin , Heaven and Hell, the Police, and Van Halen. Do you ever envision a time when you could be standing in front of Skid Row again?
No.

I had to ask that because everybody is so jacked up on reunions and reunion tours.
Then they can go reunite with their fucking people. Have fun, that’s you, that’s not me.

Understood. I appreciate that answer. Leave the past where the past is and look towards the future.
Right on. All right buddy, enjoy that jacket.

I will, and we’ll see you some place, somewhere, sometime, soon.
Hey, were me or Vince ever that skinny?

Cincinatti Ohio WEBN FM parking lot

In the middle of the national radio tour. Sitting in the parking lot of WEBN radio in Cincinati Ohio, waiting to go live on air in person with Fritz. Just drove here from Dayton where we played a bunch of new songs on WTUE with Bman (thanks dude!). Was on the air in person this morning at 7:45 am in Columbus Ohio where we played alot of  'Angel Down' on the Morning Blitz & had a great time with Blazor & Mo. Premiered the song "Falling Into You" this morning in Columbus. It feels so great to play the new music on the air across the country!

I have never done this before. I have never gone on tour without playing concerts. It's alot of travel but well worth it.  If I was doing shows there would be little chance of me going to a radio station at 7:45 am. This is a great way to let people hear the new album. The whole list of all the radio stations I am going to is on the myspace page. I will be at every station, live in person, playing fresh cuts off 'Angel Down', which finally hits stores on November 20 ! Tune into your local station to hear the new album, or come down to the station & get a free autographed poster as long as we got 'em!

In the current issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, on newsstands now, 'Back In The Saddle' off 'Angel Down' is listed at # 2 on the Editors 'Hotlist' of 'Favorite Songs, Videos, or Albums Of The Month'. This is a big honour & I freaked out in the airport when I saw it! Glad you dig it ROLLING STONE! Thanks alot for the support!

The following article appeared in Billboard Magazine & other publications. The writer condensed what I said into very short answers, & in the process of doing so, changed what I said, or the meaning of what I said. I have made small but neccessary corrections to the article. Below is the revised version of the Billboard piece:

Sebastian "Back in the Saddle" with new album
By Christa Titus Fri Nov 9, 11:09 PM ET
NEW YORK (Billboard) - After filling arenas worldwide in the '80s & '90's as the lead singer of Skid Row, Sebastian Bach developed a successful Broadway career with such productions as "Jekkyl & Hyde," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Jesus Christ Superstar." After filling arenas worldwide in 2006 & 2007 as the tour opener for Guns N' Roses, Sebastian Bach has a new CD in stores November 20 called 'Angel Down'.

Nowadays, when he's not touring as a solo artist, he can usually be found on one reality show or another, the latest being "Celebrity Rap Superstar." As the November 20 release of his new album, "Angel Down" approaches, Bach chatted with Billboard about future career aspirations and recording with the elusive Axl Rose.

1. IT'S BEEN EIGHT YEARS SINCE YOUR LAST SOLO RECORD. WHY?

The last CD I put out was actually in 2005, called "Frameshift 2: An Absence Of Empathy". Although it was not a solo album, I sing the whole album & co-wrote alot of music on it too. I feel 'Frameshift 2' deserves a mention because there is some great music on there. I've done four Broadway shows since the "Bring 'em Bach Alive!" record and I definitely count all my Broadway shows as part of my body of work. This is (also) the return of Mr. Axl Rose. The whole world has been waiting over 15 years to hear him put out new songs. That day is November 20. He sings three songs on the record.

2. HOW WAS IT RECORDING WITH HIM?

We had a great time. It took him about two hours to do "Back in the Saddle" and "(Love Is) a Bitchslap," and that was already more than I could have ever dreamed for. Roy Z., the producer, said "Dude, he's done enough. Don't ask him to do any more!" But I knew how great he would sound on "Stuck Inside' & since we were all set up, with the tape rolling, I ignored Roy & said "Axl, you could really add alot to "Stuck Inside"...would ya just maybe give it one shot?" He came into the studio, & we figured out where in the song he could sing. He then very carefully wrote out his words, and came in with this f---ing vocal at the end when he goes to this high part of this high harmony above the ending chorus. It's astonishing.

3. HOW DID YOU GET HIM ON YOUR RECORD?

I sang on "Chinese Democracy" this song "Sorry," and  toured with him all over the world in 2006 & again this summer in Australia and New Zealand. I texted him: "Hey, Axl, when are you gonna sing on my record?," just kinda kidding around, and I got one word back. He goes, "When?" And I go, "Well, we're in Monday," and he goes, "What's the address?" It's that simple. He goes, "Well dude, you know, not many people ask me to do this. I love doing this. This is the coolest thing someone has asked me to do in a while."

4. HOW DID IT FEEL TO COVER "BACK IN THE SADDLE?"

I got (Aerosmith singer) Steve Tyler's blessing on the phone 'cause Axl called him right up there in the studio and handed me the cell phone. So to get the thumb's up from Steven and Axl's a pretty f---ing good omen (to) me.

5. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO RAP ON "CELEBRITY RAP SUPERSTAR?"

I got along great with my mentor, Kurupt, and I also made a great friend in DMC. I've recorded the chorus to the new DMC single, which is a cover of Ram Jam's "Black Betty." DMC has Joey Kramer from Aerosmith on drums and he's got Mick Mars from Motley Crue on guitar. I'm singing the chorus and he's rapping.

And what was it like to rap? It was fun to be live on TV every single Thursday night eight weeks in a row with a microphone in my hand. But to be 100% honest with you, I miss melody! I wanna go up and down with my voice. I don't wanna just stay on the same note.

6. YOU'VE DONE TV, BROADWAY AND RAP. WHAT OTHER ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS WOULD YOU LIKE TO ATTEMPT?

I'm gonna write a book. I've already started on it, and so that's 100% coming. I'd also like to do all my father's (late artist David Bierk) archives, to be presented in a coffee-table kind of format.

There's also a role I would like to try out for and perform on Broadway, which is the Green Goblin in "Spider-Man." I would definitely like to kick Spider-Man's ass all over the Broadway stage eight times a week.

SEBASTIAN BACH SET FOR MTV'S "CELEBRITY RAP SUPERSTAR" TV COMPETITION

Los Angeles, CA - (8.29.07) - You've just finished your new CD and you've got Axl Rose singing on it.  What do you do next?  Go to Disneyland?   If you're Sebastian Bach, you sign on as a celebrity contestant for MTV's new weekly competition show "Celebrity Rap Superstar," which kicks off  this Thursday, August 30 at 10PM ET/PT.

Bach, known for his Platinum rock pipes as a solo artist, on Broadway, and his days with Skid Row,will be one of eight celebrity contestants culled from the worlds of music, film, TV and sports (Internet gossip mogul Perez Hilton has also been confirmed as a contestant).  Bach and the other celebrity contestants will be paired with their own rap mega-star mentor - Sebastian's will be Kurupt from The Dog Pound - with Paul Wall, Warren G., and Tone Loc already on board - who will share their respective knowledge and skills to prepare the contestants with the technique they'll need to be a master rapper.  With help from h is personal tutor, expect Bach to perform covers of some of the biggest rap songs of all time, create original raps and be tested in freestyle rap competitions, all in front of a live audience.

This isn't Bach's first foray onto the small screen nor with MTV Networks.  His reality show, "Supergroup," which also starred Ted Nugent, Jason Bonham, Scott Ian and Even Seinfeld, was a number one rated show on VH-1, as was "I Married...Sebastian Bach," & "Forever Wild", also on VH-1.  In addition, Bach spent five seasons on the popular CW series "Gilmore Girls," and made several guest appearances on the Canadian mockumentary series, "Trailer Park Boys."

Bach will release "Angel Down," his new CD, on November 20.  The album was produced by Roy Z (Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Judas Priest), and recorded at Sound City Studios & Undercity Studios in Hollywood, CA.  Joining Bach in the studio were guitarists "Metal" Mike Chlasciak and Johnny Chromatic, Bobby Jarzombek on drums, and Steve DiGiorgio on bass.  Guns N Roses' Axl Rose makes a special guest appearance contributing vocals on three of the album's songs - "(Love is a) Bitchslap," a cover of Aerosmith's "Back In the Saddle," and "Stuck Inside."

The cover art for "Angel Down" is an original painting by Bach's late father, the celebrated Canadian artist David Bierk who died in 2002. The painting, entitled "David Watching," was painted in 1990, so an emotional choice for Bach.  Bierk also created the cover artwork for Skid Row's 1991 album "Slave To The Grind," which Rolling Stone voted one of the top 5 album covers of the year.  His paintings have been exhibited in art galleries all over North America.
