from metaledge.com:
SEBASTIAN BACH is the very definition
of a star frontman, and he was in
particularly fine form on Saturday
night at the House of Blues in Los
Angeles. "I've got an announcement
to make. I'm gonna quit my band and go
back to SKID ROW. April F*@&!in'
Fools!," he bellowed about halfway through
the set, but long before that it
was clear that he's doing perfectly fine on
his own, aided by a talented group
of friends: guitarist RICHIE SCARLET and
PAUL CROOK (ANTHRAX), bassist LARRY,
and two drummers, MARK 'BAMBAM'
McCONNELL and ANTON FIG, on a weekend
pass from his day job with DAVID
LETTERMAN. Fig, who plays on the
Bring 'Em Bach Alive record and who was also
on hand for the previous (March
31) night's gig in San Francisco, has flown
out for weekend shows throughout
the tour, and he plays about half the set
alongside McConnell. Their double
drum solo was a highlight of the set, which
was heavy on crowd-pleasing Skid
Row tunes but included newer songs from the
Bring 'Em CD, including the singles
"Rock 'N' Roll" and "Superjerk,
Superstar, Supertears." Enjoying
the show from the VIP balcony were CHARLIE
BENANTE and SCOTT IAN of Anthrax,.
Wrestler CHRIS JERICHO
was also on hand, and jumped on
stage to join Bach in singing the
show-closing number, "Youth Gone
Wild." Bach plans to remain on the road
through the summer and will be
heard on a couple of upcoming tribute albums
to MICHAEL MONROE and RANDY RHOADS.

Bach & Friends/Decker
The Royal
Grove, Lincoln, NE
February
29, 2000
You know you
are in for a great evening when you walk into a club and Lillian
Axe's POETIC
JUSTICE is blaring in all its glory from the giant stacks of PA
speakers.
And when you look around there isn't a flannel shirt or one pair of
baggy pants
anywhere in sight. After grabbing some cool refreshing beverages,
my wife notices
Drunk Monkey (Mark "BAM BAM" McConnell-drums) grabbing a bite
to eat in
the back of
the club
right amongst the fans. Not your typical aloof rock star vibe...very
cool!
After finding
a good spot in the balcony above the stage, local band Decker
got the evening
started. I don't like to bag on bands, but watch me be a
prick. :)
The band came off to me as a really bad Britny Fox soundalike.
Their set
was 50% covers and only about 30 minutes long, but what a long 30
minutes for
a critical bastard like me. At least they are up there playing
while I wait
around for a good band situation to present itself. But I
digress...
By the time the last note from Decker finished ringing, the place
was filling
up pretty good and a familiar metal energy vibe was permeating
the club.
I'd estimate about 800 people were packed in and the local radio
station
actually
promoted the show which I'm sure helped bring out the faithful.
Lights out
and Sebastian Bach & Friends hit the stage to the kick-ass show
opener "Slave
To The Grind" with Bas in full microphone swinging fury. What a
perfect tune
to whip everybody into a frenzy and set the mood for the rest of
the evening.
Following hot on the heels of "Grind" the band launched into
"Here I Am."
Stopping long enough just to say hello, next up was the killer
Wolf Hoffmann
co-penned "(I'll
Never Turn
My Back On) Rock 'N' Roll." By this time I was saying to my wife
that they
sound better than the last time I saw Bas with Skid Row in '92. We
were on the
side of the stage of perennial Ace Frehley guitar sidekick Richie
Scarlet.
I knew Richie could play, but damn he sounded good! Great mixture of
bluesy and
'80s metal type licks. On the opposite side of the stage, and
harder to
hear because we were behind the PA and could only hear the stage
sound, was
recently departed from Anthrax guitarist Paul Crook. He is most
definitely
a guitar wizard and the combo of his and Richie's playing was a
perfect blend.
I ogled over Paul's beautiful collection of B.C. Rich
"Mockingbird"
guitars including one with an acrylic see-through body
with a transparent
finish...very wicked. Straight from the witness protection
program,
bassist Larry held down the bottom end locking in tight to Bam Bam's
thundering
drums. Bas sounded fuckin' good and looked to be having a blast.
In fact,
the coolest thing about the show is that they were most definitely a
bunch of
friends having one heck of a kick-ass time. Even the crew seemed to
be having
a blast whilst working their asses off. This vibe certainly leaked
into the
audience and added to the festive atmosphere. New songs
"Counterpunch,"
"Done Bleeding" and "Superjerk, Superstar, Supertears"
sounded right
at home along side Skid Row gems like "Piece Of Me," Riot Act,"
"Wasted Time"
and "Frozen." "Wasted Time" was particularly moving as
Sebastian
put every ounce of himself into it (as he did every tune). It was
great to
hear "The
Threat" live as I don't recall having seen Skid Row perform it. By
the time
the band launched into "Monkey Business" I didn't think the floor
would be
able to support the rocking masses. And when the song morphed into
"Godzilla"
during the breakdown midsection I was sure that I heard support
beams snapping
(unless that was Bas' swinging microphone cracking skulls. :)
I don't know
how the hell he doesn't hit someone!) The song swerved back into
"Monkey Business"
and the band left the stage. The encore was imminent, as I
hadn't heard
a good screaming crowd like that at the Grove in years. Sure
enough, Paul
and Richie came back to the stage armed with acoustic guitars
for the moving
Jimmy Flemion penned "The Most Powerful Man In The World."
Keeping it
acoustic, next up was "I Remember You" replete with a nice
audience
sing along. Capping off the evening, Bas and crew whipped the
crowd into
a final frenzy with "Youth Gone Wild."
I don't remember
the last time I had this much fun at a show. Sebastian &
Friends definitely
turned a Tuesday night in Lincoln into a full-blown
Saturday
night rock and roll party. I hope it isn't another Leap Year before
these rock
and roll monsters blaze into town. Do yourself a favor and check
them out
if they are anywhere near you
or if that
isn't possible pick up the CD, BRING'EM BACH ALIVE!, 'cause it
smokes! This
is the band that along with Uncle Tedly should be opening on the
current KISS
tour.
I want to
thank Mark Morton and Jen at CHIPSTER Entertainment for arranging
things and
my wife for helping me type this up after I fucked up my wrist
(and no matter
what Wadzinski says I did to fuck it up, don't believe him!).
:)
